How to Calculate a Tip
Tipping is a standard practice in many service industries to reward good service. While mental math can work for simple percentages like 10%, calculating an 18% or 22% tip on a complex bill—especially when splitting it among friends—can be tricky.
The Basic Tip Formula
Tip Amount = Bill Amount × (Tip % ÷ 100)
Total = Bill Amount + Tip Amount
Standard Tipping Etiquette
While tipping norms vary by country, here are general guidelines for the United States and Canada:
- Sit-down Restaurants: 15% (Average), 18-20% (Good), 25%+ (Excellent).
- Food Delivery: 10-15% of the bill, or a minimum of $3-$5 depending on distance and weather.
- Bartenders: $1-$2 per drink or 15-20% of the tab.
- Coffee Shops: $1 per drink is appreciated but often optional.
- Hair & Beauty Salons: 15-20% of the service cost.
Splitting the Bill
This calculator also includes a "Split" feature. By entering the "Number of People," the tool divides the Total (Bill + Tip) equally. This ensures everyone pays their fair share of both the meal and the gratuity.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Enter Bill Amount: Input the subtotal from your receipt (before tax is usually recommended, but many tip on the total).
- Set Tip Percentage: Enter your desired percentage (e.g., 15, 18, 20).
- Split the Check: If you are with a group, enter the number of people paying.
- View Result: See exactly how much the tip is, the total bill, and how much each person owes.
