How this Grade Calculator Works
Most college and high school courses use a "weighted" grading system. This means that not all assignments are created equal. A final exam worth 30% of your grade has a much bigger impact than a homework assignment worth 5%.
The Weighted Average Formula
To calculate your final grade, we multiply each grade by its corresponding weight, sum those values up, and then divide by the total weight entered.
Grade = (G₁×W₁ + G₂×W₂ + ...) / (W₁ + W₂ + ...)
Where:
- G: The grade percentage you received on the assignment (e.g., 85 for 85%).
- W: The weight of that assignment category (e.g., 20 for 20%).
Percentage vs. Points
This calculator is designed for percentage-based grading systems. However, you can also use it for point-based systems if you treat the "Weight" as the total points possible for that assignment and the "Grade" as the points you earned.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Enter Assignment Name: (Optional) Label your row, e.g., "Midterm" or "Essay 1".
- Enter Grade: Input the score you received (0-100).
- Enter Weight: Input how much this assignment is worth (e.g., 25).
- Add Rows: Click "Add Another Assignment" to include more items.
- View Result: The calculator updates automatically. Ensure your total weights add up to 100 for a final semester grade calculation.
